Reading Notes: The Gospel of Mark Part A

This week I chose to read the Gospel of Mark. I chose this because I wanted to use this as my weekly reflection on where my life is going these days. I find that every time you read a different passage in the bible, you get a new experience or insight from it. As it said in the introduction, this version did not have the typical verses like the bible usually does, which made it feel more like I was listening to this story back in the time this was first being told.

The gospel of Mark is interesting to me because, while each of the gospels tell the same story of Jesus, they each focus on a different audience and tell it in their own way. I feel like Mark's version of the story of Jesus isn't as symbolic as some of the others, its very factual. I think its interesting that this gospel starts with the baptism of Christ, while omitting the birth and other traditional stories about his life.

In part A of the reading, I want to focus in on is Jesus the Healer. This section of the reading focuses in on many of the miracles Jesus performed, especially among those with unclean spirits. I think its interesting that when he cast the unclean spirits out of a man, he forces them upon the swine. This probably coincides with the Jewish belief that pork is unclean and they did not eat it certain times of the year. I think this image can be more so related to our times because Mark emphasizes that every person that was healed by Jesus asked for help and forgiveness. Jesus was doing things that no one had done before, and all he asked for in return was that people believe in him. By doing this, I think he started the Christian mindset that we should always humble ourselves, and that we should always believe that anything is possible through God and his son.

Introduction

Hey everyone, my name is Stephanie Krawczyk. I'm from Tulsa, Oklahoma and I am beginning my senior and final year here at the University of Oklahoma studying Chemical Engineering. Although there are a lot of cool things about m major, I think the coolest thing about my major is that even though I have learned so much in my time here, there is so much out there to discover and continue learning! I love my family and I love that Tulsa isn't too far of a drive from them. And they can make the trip up to see me too. I have a younger brother, Adam, who just moved into his freshman year at the University of Arkansas, and I am so excited to see where his life takes him in the next couple of years. Also I have one dog who is the coolest dog in the whole world (even though all dogs are amazing). Her name is Kacy and she's 10 years old. I always make my parents send me pictures of her. Here is a picture I took of her: One of my other favorite things is food. I can't think of...

Reading Notes: Czech Folktales Part A

This week I wanted to get ahead and dive into the European Unit. The Czech Folktales immediately stood out to me because of my ancestry in Poland. The Polish and Czech have many similarities culturally, so I wanted to see what kinds of story telling techniques and story plots the Czechs told. The first story in this part of the reading was Sleepy John. I thought that the character development in this story was really cool because initially you have John who sleeps all the time. This gets him into some unusual and difficult situations, but he manages to overcome them. By the end of the story, Sleepy John has obtained the entire kingdom. As a whole, I thought it was really cool that a character that was initially thought to have some negative characteristics turned out to be an awesome and smart character. Maybe he was just tired all the time from all the crazy situations he gets himself into. The next story was Silly Jura. This trend in the title names started to attract my attentio...
