Week 3 Story: The Parable of the Pups

There once was a family of purebred French bulldogs. They were very well off but they had never been challenged, and the mother and father began to worry that her pups were going to turn out spoiled and rude. The father was always out hunting for food for the family, so usually the mother was with their three pups. It had been a long time since the pups had seen their father. One day a dog who looked like their father began to walk towards their house, however, it was actually a mutt. The pups saw him in the distance and ran to greet him because they were overjoyed that their father had returned! They each brought with them a present to welcome him home with. The first pup brought his favorite toy with him, the second pup brought her favorite brush with her, and the third pup brought with him the most delicious treat that he had been saving to eat after they finished their chores. When they approached the dog that looked like their father they began to realize that this dog was not their father. Two of the pups began to run back into their house, but one of the pups gave him the present and invited this dog into their home. The other pups did the same for their sibling inspired them. The stranger dog was very gracious for their kindness, as most people often turned the other way. When they walked into their home, the mother was at first very concerned, but then very pleased. She had seen the lesson and leadership that her pup had taught the others and even herself. Soon after, the real father walked into the home. He explained that he had met this other dog out hunting, and that he would like to have him stay with them for a while. He was very pleased with how his family had reacted and hoped that there would be more great lessons for them to learn.

Author's Note: This week after reading the Gospel of Mark, I chose to write a parable because I like the hidden and mysterious messages that Jesus' parables held. The point of parables is not necessarily for the message to be hidden, but almost that it's so obvious, sometimes it makes you really think about its meaning. The specific parable that I based my ideas off of was the parable of the sower, but mainly I wanted to create my own, geared towards children, with the only idea that was taken being the cryptic underlying message. The underlying moral of my story was to not judge others by their looks, and to treat others how you want to be treated.

  1. WOW! I thought that the mutt was going to attack them or something! What a noble act of kindness that puppy showed.

I really wonder what would have happened if the mutt turned out to be a deadly wolf. I think this story would be really interesting if it were expanded into a much more elaborate plot by making the wolf start out as cunning and friendly, but deep inside he has deadly motives. The wolf would enter the home, and the mother would be worried, maybe one of the pups is always suspicious of them. The wolf keeps his composure for a long time, gaining the trust of the family, until one night he sneaks over to kill the mother. But as he attacks her and tried to kill her, the pup that was always suspicious runs over and saves her!

Noble acts of kindness are beautiful and show a lot of character, but it is also important to be careful about just how friendly you are being! This alternative story would be a reminder to be careful around strangers :)

  2. Hello Stephanie,
Your story is so adorable, especially at the moment when the three pups thought the mutt was their father and runs out to give him their presents! I was thinking what if adding dialogues to your story will help readers learn more about the personalities of each characters, but after reading, I think dialogues aren't needed. Your storytelling style is smooth and is already easy to read. Great job!

  4. Hi Stephanie! Great story! The was very creative to work in puppies as the characters in the Gospel of Mark. I have not read the original story but I'm sure this story captures the theme of the story well. The parable sounds much more interesting and relatable from the perspective of the dogs!

  5. Hi Stephanie! I really enjoyed your retelling — I love the idea of making parables like this one more relatable for and interesting to kids (also this story combines two of my favorite things: dogs and the Gospel). One thing I was wondering is why the third puppy decided to share her treat with the stranger? What inspired her selflessness? But overall, I thought this was a fun way to retell this story, and the message was very clear.

  6. Hey Stephanie! I really enjoyed this story because I too have written a story involving dogs. I think they are perfect for characterization. I also like how you were able to provide a positive message with this story. I also think that the picture you chose was perfect for the story. From knowing the actual story I think you were totally creative and on point with your retelling of this story.

Introduction

Hey everyone, my name is Stephanie Krawczyk. I'm from Tulsa, Oklahoma and I am beginning my senior and final year here at the University of Oklahoma studying Chemical Engineering. Although there are a lot of cool things about m major, I think the coolest thing about my major is that even though I have learned so much in my time here, there is so much out there to discover and continue learning! I love my family and I love that Tulsa isn't too far of a drive from them. And they can make the trip up to see me too. I have a younger brother, Adam, who just moved into his freshman year at the University of Arkansas, and I am so excited to see where his life takes him in the next couple of years. Also I have one dog who is the coolest dog in the whole world (even though all dogs are amazing). Her name is Kacy and she's 10 years old. I always make my parents send me pictures of her. Here is a picture I took of her: One of my other favorite things is food. I can't think of...
